Minister of External Affairs of India Dr. S Jaishankar made a two day visit to Qatar from December 27 to 28 to hold talks with his counterpart in Qatar on bilateral issues as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar paid a two day stand-alone visit to Qatar from 27-28 December 2020. During the visit he called on Their Highnesses The Amir and Father Amir as well as the Prime Minister and Interior Minister of the State of Qatar and held detailed discussions with the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.

Dr. S. Jaishankar handed over a personal message from Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to H.H. Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani inviting him to visit India and thanking Qatar for taking care of the Indian community during Covid-19. The Amir accepted the invitation to visit India at an early date. He also recalled his telephone conversation with Prime Minister during which both leaders had decided to set up Task Forces on investment and energy. Both sides are in the process of implementing this decision.

His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani appreciated the contribution of the Indian community in Qatar and recalled his visits to India. EAM thanked him for his continued guidance on India-Qatar relations. He also appreciated Father Amir for his insights on global and regional developments.

Prime Minister and Minister of Interior H.E. Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani and EAM discussed strengthening bilateral economic and security cooperation.

EAM held detailed discussions with Deputy PM and Foreign Minister H.E. Sheikh Mohammad bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani on bilateral as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest. Both Ministers discussed ways to strengthen the multifaceted bilateral relationship in areas such as energy, trade, investment, food processing, healthcare, education, culture, defence and security. They agreed to maintain regular consultations and coordination on all issues of mutual interest at multilateral fora. External Affairs Minister extended invitation to Deputy PM and Foreign Minister of Qatar to visit India for the first Joint Commission Meeting in 2021.

EAM interacted with the business leaders from Qatar, including the Chairmen and board members of the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Qatar Businessmen Association. External Affairs Minister appreciated their commitment for business partnerships with India and briefed them about new opportunities flowing from Atmanirbhar Bharat.

EAM held a virtual interaction with the Indian community in Qatar. He appreciated the contribution of the community in meeting the Covid-19 challenge. EAM visited the Ahmed bin Ali FIFA Stadium that has been constructed by Indian company L&T along with Qatari partners Al Balagh group. He also visited the Qatar National Museum.

Under the Vande Bharat Mission, Indian government has been bringing back Indians from abroad in phases. 173 flights and 3 ships has been involved so far covering 34 countries. So far under Vande Bharat Mission, 9 flights with 1520 passengers plus 45 infants has been repatriated from Qatar.

Dr. S. Jaishankar, external affairs minister of India had a detailed review meeting of Vande Bharat Mission on Tuesday. He held this review meeting with officials from all the agencies and ministries involved in the repatriation exercise.

The government plans to bring back 1,00,000 Indian nationals stranded in as many as 60 countries in the on-going second phase of the Vande Bharat Mission (VBM), said Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar. He also added that, Air India will shortly shift to direct ticketing to facilitate bookings abroad.

Dr. S. Jaishankar in a series of tweets on after concluding the review meeting with officials from MEA India, MoCA GoI, Air Iindia, MHA, DMA, Bureau of Immigration he said,

  • Focus of meeting was to ramp up the scale of Vande Bharat Mission (VBM) and enhance its efficiency.
  • Phase 2 of Vande Bharat Mission extended from 17 May to 13 June 2020. So far of 173 flights and 3 ships covering 34 countries. Target 100,000 passengers from 60 countries.
  • Preparations for 3rd phase – widening our footprint has commenced.
  • Increase in entry points and expanded feeder flights being planned.
  • Arrangements being made for amnesty beneficiaries in the Gulf.
  • Air India will shortly shift to direct ticketing to facilitate bookings abroad.
  • Center is working with state governments for more efficient use of cumulative quarantine capacity.

Under the Vande Bharat Mission, Indian Nationals abroad having “compelling reasons” are being brought back to India which includes elderly people, students, pregnant women and nationals who are facing the prospect of deportation.

External Affairs Minister of India Sushma Swaraj will be here in Qatar on Sunday. As a part of her official tour to this region, she visits Kuwait after visiting Qatar. Sushma Swaraj is set to hold meetings with HE Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. During her visit, she will also interact with the Indian community in Doha.

During her visit to Qatar, Swaraj will interact with her counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister. She will also call on Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, Emir of Qatar. She will also interact with the Indian community in Doha, the MEA said, Reported indiatimes.com

“Qatar hosts about seven lakh Indians. It is a reliable energy partner, supplying more than 50% of India’s natural gas imports,” said a statement by India’s External Affairs Ministry.

The bilateral visit of the Emir of Qatar in March 2015 and Prime Minister of Qatar to India in December 2016 and that of the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Qatar in June 2016 have further boosted traditionally cordial and close ties between the two countries, the MEA said.
