Qatar National Library (QNL) reopens to the public from today, 15 July 2020

Qatar National Library (QNL) reopens to the public from today, 15 July 2020. Both members and non-members can access QNL from Wednesday with limited services, hours and capacity. Phase 2 of the gradual lifting of COVID-19 restrictions implemented in Qatar from 1st of July 2020 as per the initial plan decided by The Supreme Committee for Crisis Management. As a part of the Phase 2, Qatar has decided reopening of parks, beaches, restaurants in several areas, museums and heritage sites.

QNL  the safety of public and QNL staff, library reopens with all measures in place in line with recommendations from the Qatar Ministry of Public Health and the World Health Organization.

Following precautionary measures has been stated on Qatar National Library website which you need to know:

  • By Appointment: You can visit library only with a prior appointment
  • Time Slots: Two time slots are available from Sunday to Thursday – 9:00 – 11:00 AM or 12:00 – 2:00 PM
  • Book your appointment online – https://registration.qnl.qa/booking-service
  • Maximum of 100 people only will be allowed inside the library for each time slot
  • Green status on the Ehteraz app: You are allowed inside only if you have Green status on the Ehteraz app
  • Temperature will be checked at entry
  • Entry not allowed without a face mask or a shield. Also you should wear it all the times when you are inside
  • Allowed age: Ages from 13 to 60 only are permitted entry
  • 48 hours advance booking through email required to collect books. DVD’s, CDs or electronic equipment will not be allowed.
  • Follow social distancing. Social gathering of more than 5 people are restricted and you will be monitored by QNL security
  • Until further notice Restaurant and Cafe are closed. However, Vending machines are available in the Quiet study room
  • Drive-Thru Book Return Station in front of the building or the bins that are available at the Library’s main entrance to return the borrowed items
  • Borrowed items will be renewed automatically until further notice

A Qatari Citizen or an expat holding a resident permit is eligible to obtain a free library card.

How to become a QNL Member?

It is a simple process to receive a QNL member card. Here you go!

         For Age: 18 years & above

  1. Fill in the online registration form. Click here for the online registration form.
  2. You will be given an auto-generated barcode number upon completing the form.
  3. Email ([email protected]) a copy of your valid Qatari ID / RP (both sides of your Qatari ID)
  4. You will then receive your Barcode and PIN number in your registered email.
  5. Along with your valid Qatari ID/RP Visit the “User Services Desk” at the Qatar National Library to receive your library membership card.

          For Age: 0-17 years (Children and Teens)

  1. Fill in the online registration form. Click here for the online registration form.
  2. A parent or legal guardian should fill in the Terms and Conditions Form and then print and sign on it.
  3. Email ([email protected])
  • The scanned copy of the signed Terms and Conditions Form
  • Your child’s valid Qatari ID/RP (both sides of the Qatari ID) or passport

          Or bring all the above documents along with you and visit the “User Services Desk” at the QNL to receive your child’s library card.

Membership Benefits

Being a QNL Member you can

  • Have 24×7 accesses to the Library’s online resources (includes 500,000 e-books, periodicals, newspapers and other materials)
  • Borrow books from the Library’s print collection
  • Access the Heritage Library collections
  • Participate in all QNL academic, educational and public programs and services

Managing your QNL Account

Log into your account by entering your barcode / Qatar ID and PIN without any space and press “Submit”

QNL membership account allows you to:

  • Check your loans and due dates (including Interlibrary Loan items)
  • Any items requested by you can be checked
  • You can renew items (except for Interlibrary Loan Items)
  • View requests placed by you and awaiting pickup.
  • View any fees or blocks and fines on your account.
  • Check your email notifications about your library account.

Modify Your PIN:

  • Choose “Modify PIN” on the left sidebar menu, below your account details.
  • In the pop-up window, enter your old PIN once. Then enter a new PIN twice in the text boxes provided.
  • The PIN must be at least four characters long and should contain a mix of letters and numerical characters.
  • Click the ‘Submit’ button.
  • Next, you get a screen that says “Your PIN has been modified”. This means that you have successfully modified your PIN, so you can close that window.

Forgot Your PIN?

To resend your PIN – Send an email request to [email protected] along with all your details.

Lost your QNL Membership card?

By phone or in person, report the loss of your membership card to the Qatar National Library at the earliest.

As a member you are liable for all the materials, fees and fines checked out on your QNL member card until the loss of the card is reported.

  • Get your card replaced for free for the first time when you lost it.
  • The second time you will have to pay QR 25 to get your replacement
  • The third time you will have to pay QR 50 to get your replacement

Qatar National Library with over a million books – Become a member

The 45,000 square meters state-of-the-art library building is designed to encourage library visitors to explore the progression of knowledge from the past to the present. It is designed to achieve balance between content availability and accessibility, on the one hand, and content preservation and security, on the other.

The building will also have facilities for individual and group study and research. These facilities will be suitable for different age groups and demographic features of the Qatar community. This includes:

  • Assistive technology area with all equipment and specialized software applications to enhance the experience of users with special needs
  • 686 square meters children’s section
  • Dedicated area for teens and young adults
  • 6 instruction / tutoring rooms
  • 21 various size individual and group study rooms
  • 27 student and faculty carrels in different locations in the building
  • 2 multimedia rooms
  • Auditorium with about 120 seats
  • Finally, the building will house a specially designed restaurant, a café, and a special events area to enhance the social and recreational aspect of visitors’ experience.

Any Qatari citizen or resident permit holder is eligible to receive a free library card. To become a QNL member, follow the simple steps below:

18 years of age and above

  • Fill in the online registration form.
  • An auto-generated barcode number will be given to you.
  • Send a copy of your valid Qatari ID/RP (both sides) to ([email protected]).
  • Your Barcode and PIN number will be sent to your registered email.
  • Visit the User Services Desk at the Library along with your valid Qatari ID/RP to receive your library membership card.
